Ghana, the first black nation to gain independence in Africa south of the Sahara is steeped in history. Among the well-known historical monuments are important Pan-African sites. Next are the numerous European built forts and castles (designated as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO) strung along the country’s coastline that played a major role in the shaping of world history between the 15th and 19th centuries. From these massive buildings vast quantities of gold was sent off to enrich Europe not to mention the millions of African youth who were held in their dungeons to be carried off in chains to be enslaved in the New World.

There are several other attractions to discover, such as cruising on Lake Volta, one of the largest man-made water bodies in the world, sport fishing, as well as Hang and Para-gliding.

Ghana has of late become a favourite conference destination for many. And there are other international events such as the bi-annual Pan-Afriucan Festival for Arts and Culture (PANAFEST) as well as Emancipation Day which is held from mid-July to early August every year to commemorate the final abolition of slavery in all British colonies in 1834.
